These are the top rules of stringing I think every beginner and expert stringer should follow.
- Be safe! Be careful not to slip using scissors and don’t use lighters unless you know what you are doing.
- Use quality materials. The mesh, sidewall, and shooting laces you use will help you achieve the best pocket possible. I never use materials from the big box manufactures such as Warrior, Brine, and STX. In most cases these manufactures source there products from overseas and the quality is down right crap. When looking for supplies source the best possible. This does not always mean the most expensive but don’t let a few quarters deter you from buying quality supplies. More on buying stringing supplies can be found here.
- Start by stringing basic pockets. Everyone wants to be able to string a custom trad but you need to start with basic mesh first. I’ll take that one step further and say you need to start with white 10 diamond hard mesh. White 10 Diamond hard mesh is the industry standard.
- In order to get good you need to practice. When I started stringing I would string a head over and over again until I could get a pocket I liked. Buy some hard 10 D white, a spool of sidewall, a dozen laces and start stringing.
- Play wall ball. You have no clue how your stick actually works until you go throw with it. You could string the most beautiful stick in the world but, until you go try it you don’t know how it will throw. By playing wall ball you get the feel for different types of stringing styles and pocket setups. If you don’t like how a stick throws try tweaking it while your on the wall.
